Support for Louisiana Continues with Just Recovery Network

Orphan Grain Train continues to support food insecurity relief efforts in Louisiana. We are working with Toi Carter of Louisiana Just Recovery Network. The food security group has been working together to prepare food to go out to 800 families’ communities in need across Southern Louisiana. The food will go out to communities that LJR has worked with since Hurricane Ida. LJR helps with the logistics of receiving food and coordinating people coming together. The food is going to rural communities in Plaquemines Parish, St Charles, St John, St James, and Ascension Parish as well as urban communities in New Orleans and Baton Rouge – each experiencing lack of access to healthy foods for different types of reason.
Toi shared that this Food Group includes some staff of non-profits who are working overtime to get these supplies together, but most are volunteers coming together – in the spirit of service and Jesus’s love – to prepare this food. The volunteers come together from across Southern LA, but many are also from other places around the world including republic of Vanuatu, Haiti, Ghana, and Cameroon.
“Our work since April was to break down 1600 lbs. of rice and 800 lbs. of dried beans into individual units. We held four different volunteer days to accomplish this. We’ve learned along the way, shifting our technique from vacuum sealing to the mildly heated levers that seal bags. Volunteers have been sent by all of the organizations in our member network and have ranged from 8 people to a recent group of 20 youth and adults from the Rural Roots summer camp – who got us through the last 400 lbs. of beans!” – Toi
