OGT Houston Happenings

God’s provision for the Houston Branch has come in unexpected and creative ways. So many God moments it is overwhelming to be touched by Him over and over as we fulfill His command to care for orphans, widows, and those who cannot provide for themselves so they can see and know the hope we have in Christ, Jesus.

  • What to do with a donated, full-length, silver fox fur coat?  God led us to a faith-based consignment shop who then sold the fur generating $1,000 for OGT Houston.
  • How did we fund our first international shipment to Malawi – $11,000?  God moved an anonymous donor who offered to pay shipping costs.
  • How God furnished our Servant Center and equipped our Warehouse through donations…
  • Oak trees, crepes, shrubs – donated by a Landscape Co. – $40,000
  • 16 plastic barrels used for sorting donations – local car wash
  • 1 forklift – connected with a Penske rep…he made it happen – Priceless
  • 1 16’ trailer – High Point church, Friendswood heard of the need and filled it – $10,000
  • 50 cushioned chairs – Epiphany church, Pearland upon renovating their sanctuary
  • 30 rectangular, plastic, tables – Zion church, Pasadena upon upgrading their tables
  • 1 huge, sorting table on casters – An artist who was closing her gallery in the Heights
  • Multiple warehouse racks, office furniture – Habitat for Humanity
  • 8 tables for counting and boxing donations – Habitat for Humanity
  • 1 fireproof file cabinet – generosity of a Locksmith company
  • Misc usable items…office supplies, shelving donated from an estate
  • 1 loom to weave grocery bag mats – handmade by a volunteer
  • Numerous pallets and gaylord bins – donated by local businesses
  • 4 security lights – randomly dropped off with a clothing donation. Installed by volunteers.
  • 1 Blackstone grill – donated by friends of OGT
  • Security cameras – donated by a Board member
  • …the list is endless
We would be remiss if we didn’t give thanks to God…to Him be the glory!

Volunteers faithfully show every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.  From youth needing service hours to those who are young-at-heart.  We enjoy the camaraderie of chatter and laughter with everyone who comes to serve from many different churches and community groups.

Stewards, a special group of volunteers designated to oversee the Servant Center and Warehouse during operating hours. From giving tours to cleaning restrooms and yard work, they are invaluable to the ministry.

Groups who work on special projects making quilts, hygiene kits, school kits, teacher kits are numerous across the greater Houston area and further out.  Their timing is always perfect when they call to schedule a drop-off.

Overnight guests, 16 youth from the area were our first overnight guests. They bunked in the two multi-purpose rooms and enjoyed hot showers after a day of serving in the community.  They set a goal to assemble 200 hygiene kits for OGT which they successfully accomplished with energy to spare!

Sort and Pack Saturday – volunteers were missing our sort and pack days with lunch like we used to have when working out of the shipping containers.  Over 50 volunteers showed…it was like old home week to have everyone show up on the same day to serve and, of course, eat. The donated Blackstone grill was manned by one of our Stewards who enjoyed flipping hamburgers and rolling hotdogs.

FUNdraiser – We dimmed the lights for a little warehouse ambience to host an exciting event.  A silent auction, fajitas, and margaritas mixed with a trivia competition among 12 teams made for a fun-filled evening! Trivia was a blast, the food was delicious, and the guests were supportive of the Houston Branch. Special people, special blessings!

Volunteer, Jean Carr and other faithful volunteers sorting and packing clothes in the warehouse.

Houston volunteers, Steve, Holly and Sam, traveled to St. John Lutheran in Beaumont, TX to share a presentation about the OGT ministry. Our trailer was needed to haul all the in-gathering of blessings back to Houston. Thank you St. John members for your continued support.
At the Houston Branch 47 students involved in the Key Club at Clear Brook High School volunteered their time to unload the trailer of blessings from St. John, Beaumont. They then sorted and packed 122 boxes.

OGT Houston recently was blessed to be able to deliver care baskets, and a gift of financial support given by Headquarters, to survivors of the flooding in Kerrville, Texas.  We are blessed to be a blessing for those in need.  Please continue to pray for those who lost loved ones and for those who are recovering from loss of home and property.
