El Salvador
In the spring of 2001, numerous strong earthquakes shook the country of El Salvador from January to March. More than 1,200 people were killed, and over 500,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. Nearly a quarter of the population was left homeless.
In response, Orphan Grain Train shipped 36,000 lbs of food valued over $50,000, donated by Affiliated Foods of Norfolk, Neb. The shipment arrived in late March, 2001, and was distributed by the Foundation of Social Development in Nueva San Salvador, El Salvador.
