A Massive Need Requires a Massive Response

Machinery and equipment lent to Orphan Grain Train for the hay and grain lift included: a New Holland tractor and baler from Dinkel Implement, Norfolk, a John Deere tractor and baler from Greenline Equipment, Norfolk, a Case-IH tractor and baler from Midland Equipment, Wayne, an Agco-Allis tractor and Gehl mower-conditioner from Norfolk Implement, a McCormick tractor and Vermeer baler from Vermeer, Inc., Pella, Iowa, a Kosch bale accumulator from Kosch Equipment Co., Columbus, Neb., a Gehl V-rake from Kolterman Farm Implement, Pierce, Neb., bale straps from G.I. Trailer, Norfolk, an all-terrain vehicle from B & B Cycle, Norfolk, a live-bottom grain trailer and portable fuel tank from Boe Seed Company, Madison, Neb.


Fairbanks International, Inc., of Hastings, Neb., supplied a 30-foot Krone Big M wind-rower at a good rental rate. Boe Farms, Madison, Neb., Clipston’s Service, Hadar, Neb., Farmer’s Co-op, Pilger, Neb., Northeast Nebraska Cooperative, West Point, Neb., and Zoubek Oil Co., Norfolk donated fuel in quantities from 100 to 300 gallons each.

Cellular phones and service from Cellular One, Norfolk, grease from Tractor Supply, Norfolk, grease and grease guns from Bomgaar’s, Norfolk, and fire extinguishers from Heartland Fire Protection Co., Norfolk.

Norfolk radio stations WJAG-AM, KEXL-FM, US 92-FM, and KNEN-FM, gave airtime for public service announcements and live interviews with Haylift volunteers. Norfolk Daily News, Omaha World–Herald, Lincoln Journal–Star, Kearney Hub, and many other Nebraska newspapers and magazines gave news coverage and editorial support. Other donors supplied additional fuel, grease, twine and food.

Special thanks to Northeast Community College Agriculture Department for providing students and instructors to operate equipment during the fall semester.

Jeff Walmsley of Norfolk and Bernie Wrede of Pierce loaded most of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres and cornstalk acres donated in northeast Nebraska.

Community efforts in Lincoln, Pender and Madison, Neb., And Manilla and Creston, Iowa, have produced several dozen semi-loads of hay.
