Is Orphan Grain Train non-denominational; does it work with all churches?
Orphan Grain Train is a recognized service organization (RSO) of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. This means OGT works cooperatively with the congregations, ministries, and auxiliaries of that denomination here in America and around the world wherever appropriate. Orphan Grain Train will also partner with Christian churches of any denomination involved in disaster relief efforts here in the United States when and where it is practical to do so. Orphan Grain Train volunteers are mostly members of Lutheran churches, but a number of other Christian churches are represented as well.
Why is there no Orphan Grain Train Regional Division in my state?
No one in your area has stepped forward to start the organizational process. Orphan Grain Train divisions are established by groups of Lutheran volunteers who commit to making continuous, long-lasting ministry possible in their area. They organize, donate, and raise funds to make this possible. If there is no regional division of Orphan Grain Train in your state and you would like to learn more about starting one, please contact Richard Jostes, Director of Development, at (402) 371-7393, or email us at: email@ogt.org.
What is the preferred donation method?
Cash gifts should be sent via personal check or online donation through PayPal. In-kind donations must be delivered or shipped to one of the warehouses or work-centers of Orphan Grain Train's regional divisions.
What is our money used for when we make a gift in support of the Hurricane Katrina Relief effort?
1. Shipping costs for taking requested supplies to the Gulf Coast; 2. Purchase costs for bulk supplies of food and water for the volunteer and relief camps; 3. Purchase costs of 48-ft.-long storage containers and the materials used to convert them to bedroom, shower, restroom, and kitchen units.
A group of us want to volunteer in the hurricane-affected area. What do we need to do to find a location to help?
Ask your pastor for information about organized efforts through your local church. Many church denominations have coordinators on the Gulf Coast ready to place volunteer teams where they are most needed. Teams of four or more people can work together to develop a servant event, and your church can help provide publicity to enlist contributors toward your trip expense, volunteers to join your team, and prayer partners who will pray for you each day while you’re on your mission of mercy.
If no contact information is available through your local church, you are encouraged to contact Dr. Larry Oetting, Hurricane Relief Volunteer Coordinator, The Nebraska District LCMS, at Seward, Nebraska. If he is not available when you call, please leave a message including your name, city, home church, and phone number. Dr. Oetting's office number is (402) 643-2961. His email address is: LarryO@ndlcms.org.
I am going to give a presentation about Orphan Grain Train to my group. Where can I get materials to hand out?
Call or email the Norfolk office at (402) 371-7393 and ask for Bev. Email requests should be sent to: email@ogt.org. Be sure to list your full name, shipping address, phone number, and the number of people you estimate will be at your event or presentation.
